Photography - Importance for Engravers
The need to produce quality prints or at the very least quality digital images is vital to an artist's career, especially early on when an engraver should be building a portfolio of their engraved work.   Preferably photos should be either 8x10 or 9x12 and worthy of submission to any magazine publication.   Consider that you as the artist will attend knife or firearms shows in order to promote your services.  More often than not as engravers we do not have the luxury of time to create engravings for ourselves as display pieces.  A portfolio of your work along side several engravings will be a fantastic means of displaying what you have done, what you possibly can do, and in the various mediums and styles.

Professional photo services specializing in knives, jewelry... can be very expensive, so much so that most new engravers simply cannot afford the cost of one single print let alone a series of prints per job, and there is always a chance that sending the item to the photographer could meet with a shipping issue, lost, stolen or damaged and most new engravers will not be able to absorb the severe expense of a lost or damaged luxury item. These occurrences are rare to be sure but it is prudent to be aware of the potential issues.

Professional knife, firearm photography services are excellent at what they do and will automatically send a copy to the appropriate magazines as part of the expense and is the method of choice if one desires to see their work in the standard magazines... It is not however the only means and a lot has to do with the quality of what you produce in both the engraving as well as the photography. For those of you with strong digital skills and some photographic knowledge much can be achieved with very little. If self-publishing on the web... then professional services are not as critical but your images still require a professional look.

Thoughts to remember: Always work within your means of afford ability, never fear rejection, do the best you can with what you have, always aim to satisfy the customer's tastes which should not be a problem since they have come to you and that must mean they already like your style. Finally, submit your work when possible to receptive sources and remember there's always another way!
