Engraving has adorned firearms and edged weapons for centuries and still today regardless of all our technologies engravings are still sought out by avid collectors and art enthusiasts. With the assistance of today's alloyed steels both guns and knives of the finest quality have improved dramatically and as such the tooling used by engravers has equally improved to better address today's higher standards. Fine grain tungsten carbide and cobalt gravers allow engravers to better work harder alloyed steels, however engraving hardened steels is another issue altogether and regardless of the better tooling hardened metals make it virtually impossible to control a graver and still produce the same quality results as metals that have not been hardened. Many believe that using carbide to engrave resolves these issues however the harder the graver is the more brittle it becomes and thus shattering of the much needed fine tips is inevitable. When the steels are supplied in the proper state for engraving then today's master engraving artists are capable of producing works of art that are far better than ever before in history in addition the use of high powered magnification such as microscopes allow skilled artists to produce detail that is far beyond simplistic previous rendition. This allows for deeper details and much more realism within scenes and overall much cleaner engraved work.
